I have played with Paul Burwell on numerous occasions during his time in Hull when he occupied the Kingston-Upon-Hull Rowing Club. After his death I performed at his wake along with other close friends and colleges. For the occiasion I decided to dig out a project I had been working on that featured Paul. A while back I had this idea inspired by him to make an avant-garde drum machine in software, I an electronic simulacra. I spent a great afternoon with him recording whilst he went around hitting things and demonstrating his more exotic sound making toys. I came away with 93 different noises which form the sample bank of the drum machine. Its operation works in real time based around two X/Y control panels that function as the two arms of a drummer. It also features a number of distorting effects and individual, sequence-able clocks for making unusual rhythms.

One particular sample I like has a little snippet of him talking, whilst he was showing me his collection computer hard-drives discs he used as tiny cymbals;"Hey I'm up with advanced technology, I do computer music!".

Respect to the man..
